However, let’s not be under the delusion that once it’s 2021, Covid would simply cease to exist. It’s here to stay for quite a while. So, the best way to celebrate New Year this time is to keep it low-key, preferably virtual happy hours. But if you really want to, you can even set out on a trip with your buddies and have a blast. Just remember to take into account your own safety and those around you.

Keeping this in mind, here are some tips to celebrate New Year’s During Covid.

Choosing Your Destination

In a normal scenario, you could set out on an impromptu trip to celebrate New Year. Well, not this time. You want to be a lot more careful now. So, when choosing your destination, look for places that offer outdoor activities – maybe go camping or a resort with large open spaces. This is because when you’re outside, there’s little risk of transmitting the virus as the particles disperse in the air. Indoor spaces with less ventilation leads to a greater risk.

Also, don’t plan on long-distance trips. A weekend getaway location, preferably within your state, would be ideal given the circumstances. Since it’s the New Year, there’ll definitely be more people setting out to party. Try to keep off the beaten path as you should be as away from strangers as possible. If you’re going overseas, don’t forget to check the country’s policies on quarantine and Covid restrictions.

Keep Your Circle Small

The rule of thumb with regards to Covid is that the more the people, the greater the risk of infection. So, if you’re planning on a getaway to celebrate the New Year, invite only your closest friends – preferably less than five people – and whom you’ve met often during the pandemic. It’s a lot safer to socialize with the same group often than different people.

Even so, remember that some people may carry the virus and still be asymptomatic, so exercise caution as best you can. If it’s a family outing you’re planning and you have senior citizens or people with medical conditions, skipping this trip for now is in your best interest.

Setting Out

Again, we recommend that you go to a spot within proximity of your city. Avoid using public transport – particularly buses even if they’re available, to maintain social distancing from other travelers and reduce risk of infection. If you have to opt for these modes of transport, do a thorough research first, depending on whether you’re planning to choose a state transport bus or a private bus service. G

Trains also have reduced availability and occupancy during the pandemic. They might not be the best option, but they’re certainly safer than buses. Read our guide How To Take Trains During Covid to understand better. Flights do have proper Covid precautionary measures in place, so those going on long-distance journeys can avail of them.

If it’s a short-distance trip, hire a vehicle or even better, use your personal vehicles. A New Year party would typically mean boozing. If that’s the case, just don’t drink and drive. Or maybe have a designated driver. A DUI is a complication you must always steer away from – particularly during a pandemic.

A Safe Celebration

While you’re at your destination with your friends, ensure that the place follows social distancing norms along with all the Covid safety guidelines – masks, regular sanitizing, and the likes. Don’t forget to have your own mask and sanitizer too. If there are other guests at the hotel/resort, social distancing is the way to go. Swimming pools are best avoided because you can’t wear masks while you’re in one and social distancing becomes all the more difficult if there are unfamiliar people around.

While coronavirus isn’t known to spread through food and drink, the utensils and glasses to hold them definitely carry a risk. So remember to sanitize your hands and ensure that the hotel staff serving you food and drink are following suit. Avoid restaurants and bars, if possible, and instead opt for an outdoor option. That way, you can be a lot safer from corona, look at the stars as you welcome 2021.

Things To Remember

  • Check the news for updates on Covid in your city and the location of your destination. Be up-to-date on the lockdown regulations.
  • Don’t be under the impression that you’re not at risk from Covid. Strictly follow social distancing norms – particularly with unfamiliar people. Always have your mask on and have sanitizer.
  • Even if you’ve developed symptoms for a regular flu, it’s best that you cancel the trip. You don’t want to take any undue risk that could endanger you or those around you.
  • After you reach home, get lots of rest and stay at home for as long as possible. For an added precaution, get a medical checkup done.
  • In case you have developed symptoms of coronavirus and have
tested positive, inform your group as well as your holiday destination so that all necessary measures are taken.
