Let’s face it, since 2020, life was an absolute disaster and we’re only too glad to leave it behind us. The lockdown got to us too quickly and all we want to do now is enter the new year and travel all around to our heart’s content.
But let’s be realistic here: it may look like the worst of the Covid pandemic is behind us, but if we aren’t careful enough, we may be looking at more lockdowns. So for now, it’s best to stay at home and for the ones who are traveling during the pandemic, make sure that you follow all the Covid safety norms.
Here’s to hoping that life will get back to normal in the coming months, and here are the places to travel in India in 2022.
Located in the Uttara Kannada district of Karnataka, this place is a must-visit for those with a love for mythology and adventure alike.
According to legend, Ravana received the Atma Linga, which gave the gods great power from Lord Shiva and planned to bring it to Lanka. However, Lord Shiva put a condition that if Ravana were to place the Linga anywhere, it’ll be immovable. Fearing that Ravana would get too powerful with it, Lord Vishnu and Lord Ganesha tricked Ravana into placing the Linga at Gokarna. Realizing that he’d been fooled, an enraged Ravana tried to uproot and destroy the Linga and in the process, one piece fell at the location that would become Murudeshwar.
When in Murudeshwar, you’ll be humbled by the massive architectural marvels. Right beside the Arabian Sea are the 240-feet tall Rajagopuram with its intricate carvings and the most popular attraction of Murudeshwar: a 121-feet tall statue of Lord Shiva. Make sure that you visit the Murudeshwara Temple just beside them too.
Apart from temples, Murudeshwar has a picturesque beach too, where you can have a leisurely stroll and feel the salty breeze whip through your hair. If you’re looking for something more, try your hand at snorkeling and go on boat rides too.
Nearest Airport: Mangalore International Airport (about 161 km away)

Why go to the Maldives when we have our very own Lakshadweep? This archipelago, with its pristine beaches and surrounded by azure waters is everything that tickles the wildest fantasies of a thalassophile.
While the name translates to ‘one lakh islands’, Lakshadweep has only 36 of them, of which 10 are inhabited and you can visit only 5 of them. Being a tropical destination in its truest sense, you can laze around the beach in Kavaratti. The adventurous souls can go scuba diving, which is the main attraction of the Agatti and Bangaram Islands.
Among the best places to travel in India, Lakshadweep is the only place in in the country where you can see coral reefs. They’re a threatened species, so make sure that you don’t touch them or bring them home as a souvenir unless you want to get in trouble with the law.
Nearest Airport: Agatti Airport, Agatti Island
Traveling to Lakshadweep: As Lakshadweep isn’t connected by rail or road, you’ll have to board a cruise ship from Kochi
Mouling National Park, Arunachal Pradesh
Northeast India is breathtakingly beautiful but remains painfully unexplored. So make sure that this is one of the places you visit in 2022.
Mouling National Park in Arunachal Pradesh is for the wildlife traveler who ventures into trails rarely taken. You’ll be isolated here, from humans that is. This wilderness is said to have been explored so little that it’s believed that there are many plant and animal species here that are yet to be discovered.
You’ll be surprised by the natural and climatic diversity of Mouling National Park. It’s a biodiversity hotspot, thanks to its unique location. Go to the higher altitudes, you’ll be amidst a coniferous forest that experiences snowfall. If you decide to explore the lower altitudes, you’ll be in a humid tropical rainforest that has many waterfalls! Whether you love the tropics or the cold, you have them both here at Mouling National Park.
Patience is a prerequisite for a wildlife traveler. With that and a bit of luck, you may spot the elusive Bengal tigers or clouded leopards. Up on the trees and in the sky, look out for the hornbill or the Sclater’s monal. You can also meet with the Adi tribe here and for an added dose of adventure, cross the cane-and-bamboo bridges they’ve built across the treacherous Brahmaputra River.

Nearest Railway Station: Murkongselek (about 180 km away)

This town is at an altitude of 1,951 meters above sea level, and the alpine climate of Khajjiar makes it pleasant all year round. But it’s in the summers when Khajjiar lights up. The deodar forests and the meadow that they encircle take on the prettiest hues and shades of green. And what you’ll not miss is the Khajjiar Lake, right in the middle of the meadow.
There isn’t much to do in Khajjiar. It’s a picnic spot that’s on the route between the popular hill stations of Dalhousie and Chamba. But all the same, the beauty of Khajjiar is sure to draw you towards it.

As this town has been away from the tourist radar, Kotagiri has been saved from the vices of commercialization. This has the obvious downside of having fewer things to do, but for those seeking an isolated holiday, it’s a blessing.
The weather here is pleasantly cool all year round, thanks to its elevation of 1,800 meters and the fact that it’s surrounded by the Nilgiri Mountains. A tea lover would totally fall for Kotagiri, thanks to the many tea plantations here.
Kotagiri is a trekker’s paradise too, as you can traverse your way through the forests to the Catherine Falls, and along the way, you’ll get great views of the Nilgiris. If overnight camping is on your bucket list, you can do so at the Rangaswamy Peak. But you’ll have to get a permit for the same. If you’re in Kotagiri on a leisurely vacation, just stroll along the tea plantations or visit the Kodanad View Point.

What Precautions Should Everyone Take In A Hotel During The Covid-19 Pandemic?
Opt For A Covid-ready Hotel: Most hotel websites now explain the processes in which they’re keeping their premises sanitized. Only opt for such hotels and ensure that the safety norms are adhered to.
Wash Your Hands: Irrespective of where you are, the mask and sanitizer rule applies. Use a sanitizer with at least 60% alcohol content and wash your hands thoroughly.
Avoid Contact: As far as possible, opt for cashless transactions and avoid contact with common touchpoints like elevator buttons, doorknobs, faucets, etc. If you do, wash your hands before touching your face.
Dine In: Instead of eating at the hotel’s restaurant, opt to dine in as it reduces your exposure to other guests.
What Precautions Can I Take To Avoid Contracting Covid-19?
Four simple precautions can greatly help in reducing the risk of getting Covid-19:
Wear A Mask: Covid spreads when an infected person talks, coughs, or sneezes, releasing the virus particles in the air. Wearing a mask, especially the N95, can help in reducing the spread of the virus.
Wash Your Hands: Your hands touch a lot of surfaces, which may have the virus, and then touching your eyes, nose, or mouth can lead you to get infected. To remedy that, wash your hands regularly with soap and water, or a hand sanitizer with at least 60% alcohol.
Maintain Safe Distance: Keeping at least 6-feet distance from others means you’re not in close contact with someone who may be infected. Combine social distancing with a mask, and you’re even safer!
Get Vaccinated: Vaccination drives have begun. So make sure that you register yourself for the shot on the Aarogya Setu app/Cowin portal. Keep in mind that getting vaccinated doesn’t make you immune to the virus, it only makes you more resistant to it. So the other three precautions mentioned above still apply!
