But, did you know that there is a similar breathtaking landscape closer to home? Gandikota, a small village in the Kadapa district of Andhra Pradesh, is known for its spectacular gorge formations. Dubbed the ‘Indian Grand Canyon’, the gorge in Gandikota is formed by the River Pennar that cuts through the Erramala Hills.

The village played a significant role during the Kakatiya, Vijayanagara, and Qutub Shahi rule, which in turn have significantly shaped Andhra Pradesh’s impact on Indian History. Gandikota village was first founded by the Chalukyas. After which the Kakatiyas took over, followed by the Tughlaq dynasty. It is said that the Pemmasani Nayadus ruled over Gandikota for a whopping 300 years. Soon enough though, the fort and subsequently the village was taken over by the Qutub Shahi of Golconda around the 16th century. Such an extensive history of various successions seen by the fort as well as the village has indefinitely shaped Gandikota into the historical and cultural hamlet it is today.
Gandikota has a population of just 1,118 since it is a small village in the Kadapa district. The village has a Hindu majority followed by the Muslim community and then a minority of Christians. The locals have a distinctive culture be it in the matter of the food, tradition, or even language owing to their expansive ancestry. Though the language spoken across the state of Andhra Pradesh is Telugu at large, the people in Gandikota have specific dialects and even add Urdu to their verbal transactions. As for food, while rice and curry are the staples of the locals here, you can also indulge in some delicious biryani made using distinctive spices, Mughalai style.
The local attire is consistent with the rest of the state, with cotton or cotton-silk mix sarees for women and cotton dhotis and shirts for men. The sarees may have intricate patterns or vivid colors depending on the occasion. The Muslim women often wear elegant and simple Salwar Kameez. Since 2015, the Kadapa District administration has organized an annual Gandikota Festival in hopes to promote tourism in the area. It is generally organized during the month of January and is packed with captivating cultural performances, sports events, and delectable food choices!
Being a small village, Gandikota does not have a dedicated airport. However, if you are planning to travel by flight, you can book flights to the Tirupati Airport or Bengaluru International Airport. Many flights are available from major cities like Mumbai, Delhi, and Kolkata, among others. Gandikota is approximately 4.5 hours of travel from Tirupati Airport while from the Bengaluru International Airport, it is an approximate 6 hour-journey by road. From the airport, you would have to book a cab or travel by bus to get to your hotel or to Gandikota itself.
As mentioned above, since Gandikota is a small village, it does not have a dedicated railway station either. Hence, getting there directly by train is not possible. Instead, there are railway stations near Gandikota, from where you can hire a cab or an auto-rickshaw to reach your hotel in Gandikota. The closest railway station is the Jammalamadugu Station which is about 15 km from Gandikota. Other railway station options include the Kadapa Railway Station (77 km away) and the Tadipatri Railway Station (85 km away). In any case, you are going to need to travel via road to reach Gandikota.
Traveling to Gandikota by road is the most convenient option for travel since the village and nearby towns and cities are well-connected to the highway networks and other major cities. The major national highway that connects the big cities to the Kadapa district is the National Highway 44, which is a major north-south highway. The roads themselves are well maintained and smooth, and the drive is not tiresome or extremely exhausting.
Various interstate and intrastate buses run through the state and have stops nearby or even at Gandikota. Interstate buses are available from major cities like Hyderabad, Bengaluru, Visakhapatnam, and Vijayawada which can help you get to Gandikota. A self-drive or a car journey to the city is just as possible. In fact, many solo travelers and backpackers from nearby major cities choose to travel by their own vehicle.
The summers in Gandikota are hot, humid, and dry, with the maximum temperatures rising up to 40°C. The tough climate conditions during the summers make exploration and sightseeing quite difficult and hence, the summers are not a good time to visit Gandikota.
The monsoon season starts at the beginning of July and is a welcome change from the hot and dry summers. The initial months of monsoon bring decent rainfall that does not completely hinder the sightseeing but also cools down the environment quite a lot. Around the month of August though, there tends to be heavier rainfall in the region, hence it is recommended to travel cautiously at this time. But overall, the monsoon season is a favorable time to visit Gandikota.
The tourist season in Gandikota begins with the onset of the winters i.e. from October to February. The climate is much cooler and more pleasant making the stay and exploration much more enjoyable and comfortable. The maximum temperature stays constant at 30°C while the minimum temperature goes as low as 19°C. The evenings and early mornings can turn out to be cooler than the rest of the day, so if you’re sensitive to the cold, it is recommended to carry your jackets and caps accordingly.
Traveling around or within Gandikota is quite easy through buses, auto-rickshaws, and cabs. Though, hiring a private cab service or an auto rickshaw for the day is a much more convenient option as you can travel comfortably and have the possibility to bargain on the prices too! After all, being a traveler or tourist is all about being able to explore the destination to the fullest in a pocket-friendly manner. There are private tourist buses as well, that run between different tourist destinations, in case you plan to explore other tourist spots near and around Gandikota.
Gandikota Canyon is only about the picturesque scenery and, hence, a one-day trip is enough to explore the canyon and the village.
While sightseeing at the canyon and the adjoining village might not take more than a day, the Gandikota gorge offers many adventure activities for its explorers. As the city is slowly and gradually being discovered and thoroughly explored by tourists and travelers, many tourist services have started to take hold here. Now, one can rappel down into the gorge, or indulge in rock climbing. Groups are also taken for trekking and kayaking on the Pennar River.
