In recent years, this experience has become very popular. Especially after the Bollywood movie, Rockstar. Remember the song, “Kun Faya Kun”? The song was shot right here in New Delhi’s Nizamuddin Dargah. Moreover, Nizamuddin Dargah is open to everyone.
The place has a vibe of harmony that gives you a warm feeling of acceptance and gratitude. Over the years, the dargah and the Qawwals here have been featured in multiple bollywood movies. A lot of bollywood songs have also derived inspiration from the traditional Qawwali music. Dedicated to the famous sufi saint, Syed Muhammad Nizamuddin Auliya, the devotional music played at the courtyard is nothing short of an immersive musical journey.
Where is the Nizamuddin Dargah?
Unsurprisingly, the dargah is situated at the Nizamuddin area of New Delhi. You can easily get a rickshaw or a cab here. There’s also the Hazrat Nizamuddin Railway Station nearby. Depending on which part of the city you’re coming from, there are a few metro stations really close to the dargah.
You have to reach the Baoli Gate road in the western side of Nizamuddin area. The narrow lanes here will be a treat to your senses. You will come across many stalls selling everything from fragrant and scrumptious kebabs to elegant blankets and rose petals.
When to visit the Nizamuddin Dargah?
The Qawwali music nights happen here on every Thursday. It takes place at the courtyard of the dargah and starts from 5 pm onwards till around 9 pm. However, we would suggest you go even earlier. The place gets really crowded and finding a good spot to sit and comfortably soak in the vibe of the place becomes a little difficult.
What makes the experience special?
It’s just the harmonious ambience and the dedication of the Nizami Brothers and their music. The whole experience is soul-stirring. You get to see people of all faith united and simply admiring the musical setup. Since the Qawwali music is played at the courtyard, it becomes an open air concert of sorts. Here’s another interesting fact. Nizami Brothers, who are the sufi musicians that play here, are the ones who featured in the Rockstar movie too.
What’s even more interesting is that they come from a long line of Sufi Musicians. Their family heritage involves 700 years of singing at Nizamuddin Dargah. It’s believed that they are descendents of Nizamuddin Auliya. Another thing that we find really special is just how sincere and devout they are. You also get to hear some of the famous Qawwali music which you might know because of bollywood.
Things to keep in mind
There is no entry fee to enter the dargah. Beware of scammers around who try to trick tourists into paying to get in.You have to leave your footwear outside and there is no official arrangement to keep them.
Nizamuddin Dargah is a religious place so dress appropriately. You are supposed to cover your head with a scarf or handkerchief. If you aren’t carrying one, you can easily get it at a stall outside.
